Between July 1 and July 3, 2026, a line of severe storms swept metro Atlanta and north Georgia with National Weather Service warnings for quarter-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. If your home or business was under that line, your roof may have damage you cannot see from the ground — and your window to file an insurance claim is open right now. Your insurance covers the roof; you are only responsible for your deductible.
Over three days, repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms moved across metro Atlanta and north Georgia. On the afternoon of July 3, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning over the northwest metro calling for 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, warning residents to expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Forsyth, Coweta, and Fayette counties.
Communities including Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Norcross, Lawrenceville, and Peachtree City sat under the warned line, with the heaviest reports around the Acworth area of northwest Cobb — downed trees, dented gutters, and hail-struck roofs.
Quarter-size hail is right at the threshold where asphalt shingles start taking real damage: granule loss, bruising, and cracked shingles that will pass water within a year even if nothing is leaking today. Combined with 60 mph gusts that lift and crease shingles along ridges and edges, this storm produced exactly the kind of damage that gets missed from the driveway and found on the roof.
Most standard homeowner insurance policies in Georgia require you to file a storm damage claim within 12 months of the date the damage occurred. For the July 1–3, 2026 storms, that standard window runs through July 2027.
That sounds like plenty of time. It is not. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to prove the damage came from this storm and not from later wear — and insurance adjusters know it. The strongest claims are documented weeks after the storm, not months.
The good news: your insurance covers the roof. You are only responsible for your deductible. We handle everything else — documentation, the adjuster meeting, scope supplementation, and the full repair or replacement under your approved claim.
Most homeowners assume that if they cannot see damage from the driveway, the storm missed them. That assumption costs Atlanta families thousands of dollars in unfiled claims every storm season.
Hail damage on asphalt shingles typically shows up as: shingle bruising (soft, sponge-like spots invisible from the ground), granule loss (visible only in gutters and downspout outlets), cracked shingles (will pass water within a year even if not currently leaking), and dented metal components (gutters, flashings, vent caps — the "marker" strikes adjusters look for first).
The only way to confirm hail damage is a professional inspection. We come out, walk every slope, photograph each strike, and give you a written report. No cost. No pressure. If your roof is fine, we will tell you.
